Android 16- When Google Finally Served Baklava

What do Cupcake, Oreo, Tiramisu and Baklava have in common? They're all part of one of Android's most beloved traditions, a naming story that's sweeter than you might expect.

For years, Android updates sounded less like software releases and more like someone reading the menu at a dangerously ambitious bakery.

Cupcake. Donut. Eclair. Froyo. Gingerbread.

Google was not merely building an operating system. It was constructing a dessert buffet with a Linux kernel.

Then came Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, KitKat, Lollipop, Marshmallow, Nougat, Oreo and Pie. Every new Android release brought security improvements, performance optimisations and at least one name that made developers hungry during conference presentations.

And then, with Android 10, Google cleaned the icing off the branding.

The company announced that future public releases would simply use version numbers. The official explanation was reasonable: dessert names were not always equally recognisable or easy to pronounce around the world. Android had become a global platform, so a universally understandable numbering system made more sense.

Android Q therefore became Android 10.

Professionally sensible.

Emotionally devastating.

The Desserts Never Really Left

Although Google stopped using dessert names in public marketing, the tradition continued internally.

Android 10 was Quince Tart.
Android 11 was Red Velvet Cake.
Android 12 was Snow Cone.
Android 13 was Tiramisu.
Android 14 was Upside Down Cake.
Android 15 was Vanilla Ice Cream.

Most ordinary users never saw these names. Developers, Android enthusiasts and people who enjoy looking at build information for reasons they cannot explain continued to encounter them.

Then Android 16 arrived.

Its codename was Baklava.

This was not speculation invented by an excited Turkish technology blog. Google’s own Android documentation identifies the Android 16 system image as Baklava, and the official Android API reference maps BAKLAVA directly to Android 16.

At that moment, Android stopped being merely a mobile operating system.

It became a guest in a Turkish household.

A Brief Visit to the Android Bakery

Before discussing the cultural consequences of Google choosing Baklava, we should review the menu.

The first part follows a clear alphabet: C, D, E, F and so on.

After Vanilla Ice Cream, however, Android did not attempt to find a dessert beginning with W. Perhaps Google considered “Waffle” too predictable. Perhaps someone opened a map, looked toward Türkiye and decided that the alphabet had already suffered enough.

The sequence restarted with B for Baklava.

Android 17 continued with Cinnamon Bun, which is now listed in Google’s developer documentation as the Android 17 codename.

Baklava may no longer be the newest dessert on the table, but culturally, it remains the most dangerous.

Baklava Is Not Just a Dessert

To an international audience, baklava may appear to be a sweet pastry made from thin layers of dough, nuts and syrup.

Technically, that is correct.

It is also technically correct to describe the internet as “some connected computers.”

In Turkish culture, baklava is not simply food. It is a social instrument.

Baklava appears when:

  • Guests visit.
  • Families celebrate Bayram.
  • Someone gets engaged.
  • Someone gets married.
  • Someone has a baby.
  • Someone receives a promotion.
  • Someone needs to apologise.
  • Someone would prefer not to apologise verbally but has purchased a sufficiently large tray.

A box of baklava can communicate congratulations, hospitality, respect, gratitude and, under the right circumstances, a request for forgiveness.

It is dessert-based diplomacy.

There are also rules.

You cannot bring three pieces of baklava to a crowded Turkish office. That is not generosity; that is the opening scene of a workplace conflict.

You bring a tray.

The tray is placed in a shared area. Someone immediately asks where it came from. Another person inspects whether it contains pistachios or walnuts. A third person, who claimed not to want dessert, begins calculating whether enough pieces will remain after lunch.

Within minutes, an informal distribution system emerges.

No Jira ticket is opened, but somehow the process works.

Pistachio, Walnut and the Architecture of Conflict

Like every sufficiently old and respected food, baklava comes with opinions.

Pistachio baklava is strongly associated with Gaziantep and is often treated as the premium choice. Walnut baklava has its own loyal supporters, particularly across different regions and family traditions.

This is not a debate you solve.

This is a debate you survive.

Ask ten people which version is correct and you may receive fourteen answers, two family recipes and a recommendation for a shop located six hours away.

The layers matter. The butter matters. The syrup matters. The temperature matters. The crispness matters. The ratio between pastry and filling matters.

A badly made baklava is not merely disappointing. It is considered evidence that society is losing its standards.

Google therefore selected a remarkably high-pressure codename.

Calling an operating system “Pie” is safe. Pie is a broad category. Almost anything can be placed inside it.

Calling it “Baklava” creates expectations.

The software should be carefully layered. It should feel premium. It should not collapse under pressure. Updates should arrive smoothly, and excessive background processes should not make the device feel as heavy as someone who has eaten eight pieces after saying, “I’ll only have one.”

Android 16 Was Surprisingly Appropriate

The name fits Android better than it might initially seem.

Baklava is constructed from many thin layers that become one finished product. Android is also made from layers: the Linux kernel, hardware abstraction, system services, application frameworks and the apps users actually touch.

Most people do not think about those layers.

They simply expect the final result to work.

Nobody eating baklava wants a lecture about dough thickness. Nobody unlocking a phone wants a lecture about memory management.

Both products depend on complicated engineering being hidden behind a pleasant surface.

There is another similarity: fragmentation.

Baklava changes from region to region, city to city and sometimes household to household. Android changes from manufacturer to manufacturer, device to device and occasionally between two phones that supposedly have the same model number.

Samsung has its interpretation. Xiaomi has another. Google has its own. Every manufacturer begins with Android and adds a personal recipe.

Some add useful features.

Some add visual changes.

Some add applications that cannot be removed without performing what feels like minor surgery.

This makes Android the perfect operating system for baklava. There is a common foundation, followed by endless regional interpretation and strong opinions about which implementation is best.

Why Google Stopped Using Dessert Names Publicly

Google’s decision to use numbers publicly was understandable.

A global operating system needs names that work across languages and cultures. Some desserts are unknown in certain countries. Others are difficult to pronounce. A name that sounds playful in one market may sound confusing in another.

“Android 14” requires no culinary research.

It is clear, sortable and impossible to confuse with something sold at a café.

But removing dessert names also removed some personality.

Software version numbers are efficient, but they are rarely memorable. Android 8.0 sounds like a product release. Oreo sounds like an era. Android 4.4 may require a moment of thought. KitKat immediately creates an image.

The internal codenames preserve a small part of Android’s old character. They remind us that major technology products do not always need to communicate like enterprise procurement documents.

Sometimes a mobile operating system can be named after pastry.

Sometimes that pastry can carry several centuries of cultural baggage.

Sometimes millions of developers must type BAKLAVA into their code and continue working as though nothing unusual has happened.

The Turkish Reaction

For Turkish Android users, the Baklava codename created a very specific kind of pride.

Not serious national pride. Dessert pride.

The kind that makes people who have never contributed a line of code to the Android Open Source Project feel that they are now indirectly involved in the release.

“We made Android 16,” someone might say.

No, we did not.

But we did provide the dessert.

That is not nothing.

Türkiye has contributed many things to global culture: food, music, architecture, hospitality and the ability to turn a five-minute tea break into a two-hour social event.

Baklava joining Android’s naming history feels appropriate because it represents something recognisably Turkish without needing a long explanation. It is layered, excessive, widely loved and completely incompatible with moderation.

You never eat baklava because you are hungry.

You eat it because it is there.

Then you eat another because the first one was small.

Then someone says the corner pieces are better.

Now you are involved in research.

And Then Came Cinnamon Bun

As of 2026, Android has already moved forward. Android 17 arrived under the codename Cinnamon Bun, continuing the restarted sequence with the letter C. Google officially released Android 17 in June 2026.

Cinnamon Bun is a respectable dessert.

Warm, comforting and difficult to criticise.

But it does not carry the same geopolitical energy.

Nobody places a tray of cinnamon buns in the middle of an Istanbul office and triggers an immediate debate about regional authenticity.

Nobody’s uncle says, “You have never tasted a real cinnamon bun. I know a place.”

Baklava creates conversation.

Baklava creates conflict.

Baklava creates crumbs in places where crumbs should not physically be able to reach.

In that sense, Android 16 may have received the most Android-like codename possible.

One Final Piece

Android’s dessert names began as a playful tradition, disappeared from public branding and quietly survived inside developer documentation.

Cupcake started the bakery. Pie ended the public menu. Quince Tart, Red Velvet Cake, Snow Cone, Tiramisu, Upside Down Cake and Vanilla Ice Cream continued behind the scenes.

Then Baklava arrived and gave the tradition a fresh tray.

For most users, Android 16 was simply another operating-system update. For developers, it was API level 36. For Turkish people, however, it was proof that even the world’s largest technology companies eventually understand an important universal truth:

Everything improves when someone brings baklava.

Except perhaps battery health.

Sugar cannot fix that.

Yet.
